Melanotan 2 (MELANOTAN 2) is a synthetic analog of α-melanocyte stimulating hormone (α-MSH). It binds the MC1R and MC4R receptors with affinity higher than the endogenous ligand, which is what gives it its characteristic profile in pigmentation and energy-balance research models.
Its receptor specificity is the operating consideration: MC1R drives the pigment response; MC4R drives the satiety and arousal pathway. Studies that treat MELANOTAN 2 as a single-mechanism compound miss half the data - the dual receptor profile is the signal.
